Blog Content Writing Guidelines

Content marketing, which is the creation and sharing of content to attract the attention of and engage current and potential clients and customers, is an important component of SEO. In addition to providing a target audience with relevant information, new content also attracts the attention of the search engine spiders that are always crawling the web. If a website is consistently updated with new content, it will get indexed more often, increasing the chances of a good search engine results page ranking. One important type of content marketing is blogging, however many people don’t quite know how to go about it. The key to blogging successfully is to set a routine and stick to it, so it’s important to set aside some time to do so. Here are four steps to follow for each blog post:

Brainstorm
Before getting started it’s important to decide on the main topic of the blog post. This is where most people tend to have trouble. It’s sometimes hard to think about what to write about. The most important thing is to make sure that the blog post covers a topic that is in some way related to the product or service that you offer. Don’t stray too far off topic. Topics can range from what’s going on inside the company and opinions on industry news. Blogs are a more informal form of business communication that allows blog writers to establish themselves as trusted sources of information within an industry.

Write
Think about those Writing or English class assignments in high school that involved “free writing”. Set a time limit and just write down every thought that comes to mind on the topic. If it’s just one long and jumbled paragraph, that’s OK. The point is just to get all of your ideas out and onto the page.

Edit and Optimize
Once the ideas are there, it’s time to edit it into something that’s readable. Keep your target audience in mind. After you’ve created something that reads well and provides useful information, it’s time to optimize it. Remember, think about SEO in every web activity that you take part in. Think about the keywords that you are targeting and try to incorporate a few of them into the title, URL, image tag, and content. Don’t forget that blog entries can age and rank in the search engines, too.

Promote
Traffic to a blog might occur naturally over time, but it’s important to promote blog posts. A good place to do so is via social media. Tweet links to new blog posts and post links on a Facebook fan page. Not only is this a great way to get blog posts noticed, but it is also an easy way to keep a social media profile active.
