Internet Marketing Tip: Keep It Simple

When it comes to search engine optimization, search engine marketing, and internet marketing in general it’s important to keep one thing in mind: keep it simple.  When first developing an online presence for a business, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and think that you need to use all of the tools that are available to you, all at once.  However, this isn’t the case.  You don’t want your target audience to experience information overload.  The best online marketing strategies take that into account, and plan for what works best in the long term.

The first step to keeping an internet marketing plan simple is to really understand what it is that your business and your website have to offer.  The key is to really focus on the niche of your business and be specific, not broad.  Once you have determined your niche and USP, or unique selling proposition, you can begin to market online using a targeted approach.

Web users want to find what they are looking for very quickly.  They are used to the fast pace of the internet and finding what they need with a few quick clicks that only take a few seconds.  Therefore, it’s important to avoid unnecessary distractions when marketing online.  A web user won’t spend much time on a website if it doesn’t immediately provide them with what they are looking for.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed online with all of the information that’s out there.  A business that makes it easy for a user to find your website, browse the website, and convert will have customers coming back time and time again.  One of the keys to a successful website is ease of use.  The best websites are simple.  They aren’t cluttered with too much text or lots of images and are built for the user to easily navigate.  E-commerce sites that are visually appealing and user friendly only have five products or so per page, not 25 or 50.  Some users don’t want to scroll through 50 items, half of which probably aren’t even close to what they are looking for.  Think about a menu at a restaurant.  We’ve all been out to places that have close to if not more than one hundred options.  That is far too many.  It takes too much time to go through and you can’t help but wonder, how good can the food be?  Often the best food (and the best product) is offered by a restaurant that has long specialized in that kind of food (or a company that has long specialized in a specific product).

It’s important to focus on your most important business goal and your core target audience, rather than focusing on everyone.  As the phrase goes, “keep it simple, stupid”.
