New Ranking Factor for Google – Speed

Its official, Google announced they have introduced another ranking factor into it’s already 200 + algorithms which dictate what URL sports top position in Google search results; Website Speed.

This news confirms an old blog post from late last year about Google hinting at speed for positions..

So what does this mean in the grand scheme of things … nothing much really, yes Google are now including speed as a ranking factor though they stress that content and relevance is still a far more important when it comes to keeping Google happy and ranking well in the search engines results page.

Google’s studies find that slowing down user experience decreases user engagement, users enjoy a fast site. The quicker the site the greater the chance they will click through more pages, get more information and ultimately come back to the site.

The two ways Google plans to measure the speed of webpage’s:

Googlebot will measure how each page it crawls
Google toolbar will be sending load times back to Google
According to Google’s Matt Cutts this change should only affect 1% of websites; these sites would already notice this since they’ve already rolled out this new algorithm.

The speed your website loads should always be a consideration and for most website owners I’m sure it has been. That being the case, though this is yet another Google search algorithm to consider I’m confident there are other ranking factors that we should all be focusing on.. as always content!
