Google Short URL goo.gl

Folks hot off the press today, Goggles big announcement (or should it be short announcement), Google have also entered the URL shortening game alongside bit.ly, is.gd and the other new contender Facebook (fb.me).
According to Google the benefit of using goo.gl is speed, reliability and security, protecting users from malicious sites and activity.
The introduction of both Google and Facebook URL shortening services may well put substantial pressure on bit.ly, currently the most popular shortening service on the web.

Interesting. I have become quite the fan of is.gd, but rarely see it used by others, who it seems tend to use bit.ly for the most part. (However, Mike Filsaime has included is.gd on his new Tweet Glide system. I liked that.)
But if Google’s new URL shortener can ensure stability, security and speed, as it sez on the goo.gl website, that is all to the good. Less to the good, however, might be a result of this statement also on that webpage: “Google URL Shortener is currently available for Google products and not for broader consumer use.” I guess I’ll be sticking with is.gd for the time being.

Yeah – available for “Google products” only. What is a “Google product”? I’ll be interested to know when they roll it out for general use.

  5. Interesting that Google is claiming so many virtues–speed, reliability and security, protecting users from malicious sites and activity–to shortening. I would have thought name shortening is a facility rather a faster and safer service option.
