New to Twitter? Don’t be Scared there is Room for Everyone

Are you one of those businesses that have been sticking their big toe in the pool we like to call Twitter? Still not exactly sure how to incorporate it into your daily online marketing plan? Just dive in head first and figure it out as you go.

There is good news for you. If you are not Wal-Mart and you make some mistakes there is a chance many won’t notice. Twitter is quickly growing into a gargantuan online player and with growth like this comes clutter. Clutter could be the buffer for you if something doesn’t go according to plan. Don’t worry because you are not alone.

If you think you are worried about what to say or not to say there is a good probability that most of your audience and/or competitors feel the same way. Most businesses need some time experimenting with different approaches before they find the one that works best for them. This usually takes some time because you really won’t know how it works until you build up your followers. They are the ones that will respond to your actions so you must first build up your follower list in order to really see how your efforts will react to changes. There are many different approaches to take with Twitter and you will most likely find your groove eventually. Iin the interim you can try some of these approaches. Dropping blog links from a company blog are great ways to generate curious visitors. Each time your company writes a blog post simply take the blog post link and place it into Twitter. It is good to usually accompany the link with the title of the post because Twitter changes the URL and many people won’t click on a link if they don’t know where they are going to go. Mixing up your approach is very healthy. Some days dropping a link to your blog post, other days you can post a link to a funny story and some days just taking a picture of something at the office and sharing it with your Twitter friends is a great way for them to see that you are also a human and not just a business. As you perform various techniques don’t be worried about sending the wrong message. As long as your message is nothing horrific nobody is going to scold you for it. You will most likely just not generate any decent traffic to your website from that particular effort.

You could also find your competitors Twitter accounts and take a look at what type of posts they leave. I would not recommend copying anyone’s approach but you can get some ideas and pointers on where to start with you’re Twitter marketing campaign. If you want highly targeted followers you can try following some of your competitor’s followers and some will see you are following them and reciprocate. The important thing is to not get frustrated and take your time. Twitter is not mastered over night. Try different approaches and see how well they work for you before making new changes and you will see Twitter helping you grow your business no time.

This article was written for me, because although l knew about the traffic generation through twitter l had never really imagined myself Twitter markerting, simply because l didn’t know where to start, but after reading your article, l’ll sure give it a trial.
    This is so motivating!

Wow. I have to admit I couldn’t disagree more. Everything you do in front of your clients MUST be carefully considered. What’s your brand? What’s your message? It’s incredibly important that even your philosophy with Twitter must fit into your overall strategy for how you present your company.
I would strongly urge people to setup a “dummy” Twitter account and follow any of your competitors who are already on Twitter. And give careful consideration for how you will use Twitter before diving in.

Thanks for the comment Lee, why do you think it’s important to have two accounts, one to follow competitors? could you not do this from the one account?

Just wanted to add my rather in-experienced comment. i personally thought this was a fantastic blog, and very useful for people like me who are new to all this social media technology etc.
I am quite blown away by how to even go about helping my company become more well-known, and was getting quite concerned that initially I have made no contacts etc at all. However now having read your blog, I know to take it slow and hopefully things will happen.
Thank you and carry on blogging
