Powerful Search Engine Submission Tips

Posted on February 23, 2011

Maximize your search engine submissions.

Although these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, search engine optimization and search engine submission are two different things. Optimization is the process of improving a website's position in the search engines; while website submission, also called search engine registration, is getting your site listed on the search engines.

Furthermore, once you register URLs, it doesn't mean that you will immediately receive good traffic and search engine rankings. Rather, it means that the search engines know that your webpages exist.

Search engine submission, therefore, is one of the first few crucial steps in SEO. This article will tackle valuable tips and strategies on website submission for the purpose of ranking well in search engines.

Website Submission to Directories

Directories are built and controlled by people, who compile websites from all over the Web. It's important to be listed by directories because this will increase your exposure and the chances of being "seen" by crawler-based search engines (which will be discussed further in this article).

Before you register your URL, you must come with a description. The description is usually 25 words or less and talks about what your site contains.

Now, don't just write anything in the description. Insert keywords that you want your website to show up for. Research on these keywords and don't just guess. There are websites that allow you to do such research, such as AOL Hot Searches, Google Trends, Ask IQ, and Yahoo Buzz Index and our very own AddMe Keyword Research Tool.

Directory website submission doesn't make use of obvious, call to action marketing tools. So, in the description, instead of saying "Visit our site now to get hiking boots, athletic shoes and formal footwear at affordable prices," write something like "Offers hiking boots, athletic shoes and formal footwear."

Website Submission to Yahoo's Directory

Aside from offering a search engine, Yahoo has a human-controlled directory as well. Consider being listed by this directory because it provides opportunities of being seen by Yahoo's search engine crawlers.

Register URLs in the Yahoo Directory

Standard website submission is free, while Yahoo Express is paid. Why is that, you ask? The Standard option is actually for non-commercial websites. This means that if your website sells shoes, your site will likely not be reviewed and accepted by the directory. If your site contains how-to articles on choosing footwear for various occasions, however, this website would be considered helpful, and therefore accepted.

For commercial websites, Yahoo suggests that website owners go for the Yahoo Express website submission option. Although the search engine submission fee doesn't guarantee being listed in the directory, majority of submitted websites are accepted.

Submitting to Crawler-Based Search Engines

Some of the most popular crawler-based search engines are Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Unlike directories, crawler-oriented search engines automatically index webpages in the listings. Thus, most, if not all, of your webpages will be listed instead of just your main page. Website submission also means that you have higher chances of ranking well if your website is well-developed.

Search Engine Submission to Google

The best way to be successful in website submission to crawler-based search engines is by conducting a strong link building campaign. These crawlers look at a website's links. The higher the value of a site's links, the higher they rank in the search results.

A good thing about Google is that if you register URLs to the major directories, you have higher chances of ranking higher. Thus, you don't have to do additional work to be listed. On the other hand, a link building campaign that goes beyond directories will provide even more valuable links.

Another website submission option is to use Google's free registration page. All you have to do is send in your URL directly to Google and its algorithm will do the rest. One thing to note, though, is that this doesn't guarantee that your site will show up in the SERPs. Nonetheless, it only makes sense to send in your main page through this search engine submission tool.

In addition, you might want to submit some pages within your site in case the crawlers encounter a problem when indexing your home page.

Search Engine Submission to Yahoo and Bing

Yahoo and Bing may not be as popular as Google, but they're still widely used crawler-based search engines. As with Google, Yahoo and Bing have Web crawlers that can find the vast majority of websites on the Internet as well search engine submission pages.

When done along with website optimization, search engine submission can bring in remarkable results. Remember these website submission tips to be successful in your online marketing efforts.
