Search engine submissions have been on the downward trend since the early 2000′s. However, many people still utilize submission services to save time and increase exposure across the smaller search engines.

During the 90′s to early 2000′s, search engine submissions were the talk of the town and it seemed to be the fastest way to get a site indexed by the search engines.

These days, it’s a very different story. With the advancement of search engine technology, the time it takes to discover and index new web pages has drastically changed. Back in the days, it used to take weeks, if not months, to get a new site indexed in Google or Yahoo. But today, it can take as little as a few minutes to hours before a new page is indexed.

To understand the purpose of search engine submissions, one needs to understand what search engine indexing is. To be indexed by a search engine means that the search engine has crawled your web page and it has been added to the search engine’s database. Once indexed, links to your site may appear within the search results when someone runs a search for keywords related to your niche.

3 Ways a Website is Indexed by the Search Engines:

You can submit your URL directly to the search engines.

You can submit your URL to the search engines via a web program or software.

You can let the search engines find your site.

In regards to the 3rd point, you may be wondering how in the world a search engine would find your site when you haven’t submitted it. Well, there’s 2 possible ways.

The first way is by crawling the web and discovering new links. If you happen to have gotten a link from a site and Google crawls it, there’s a good chance your site will get indexed fairly quickly.

The second way is more theory than hard truth. Some SEOs believe that when new domains are registered, the registrars share this public data with the search engines. A new domain registration would be the signal for a new website or just a domainer purchasing a new domain.

Either way, the search engines will crawl the domain and check to see if indeed there is a site there.

If you don’t mind submitting to one search engine at a time, you can visit each search engine individually and submit your URL.

Submit to Google: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url?pli=1

Submit to Bing: http://www.bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url

Submit to Yahoo: not necessary because Yahoo gets its search results from Bing.

If you prefer not to go through the tedious task of submitting one at a time, you can use a free search engine submission tool online. These web-based programs allow you to automatically submit to multiple search engines using a single submit form. Here’s our very own search engine submission tool.

If you’re in no rush to get your site found, you can just let the search engines find you naturally. Articles are like food for the search engines, so they love to find fresh and unique content.

The Google sitemap generator is among the many webmaster tools used to create websites. Having a sitemap on your website helps to not only make the website more visible to search engines, but it also makes inner pages discoverable by a visiting search engine. Before you site submit, incorporate this into your website. Easy directions are included with simple website sitemap tools, such as the one found at AddMe.com: http://www.addme.com/ror-sitemap-generator.htm.

If you are a webmaster, but hesitation implementing a sitemap, consult with a professional website designer who understands website promotion, optimization and website submission processes. While you can do most of the work yourself, a designer can help you with visibility in all possible ways for your website.

Isn’t Site Submission Enough?

Submitting to Yahoo, Google and other search engines is just the beginning of successful promotion, but you should do so after the sitemap is created, otherwise you’ll need to resubmit the website to actually get those sitemaps submitted to the search engines. Sitemaps are not used by your visitors; they provide directions to search engines and consist of an organized listing of coded text links that point to various pages and links within your website. There is the ability to include priority ranking and the frequency with which updates are made, so search engines know when to check again.

Sitemaps are Part of SEO Best Practices

Your first site promotion generally will take the form of adding a URL. This can be done with each search engine individually or in bulk through a site submission company. Sitemaps are produced in either HTML or XML format for search engine use. It is one way that you can help promote your website pages. Including a sitemap is an SEO best practice effort. You can also include metadata for website content, which contributes to optimization of your content.

Sitemaps are also important if your website contains dynamic content or certain images created with AJAX that is hard for search engines to discover. It is a great way to boost search visibility of a new website that may not have many backlinks. You should include linking from page to page within your website, but if you have many pages without linking, this will facilitate discoverability.

Once completed, submit it to relevant search engines. If you need multiple sitemap files to include everything, do a master list of all those as an index. This will help funnel the searches where you want them to go. Remember, the most important part of website promotion is getting noticed, by the public and by search engines.

Registering your website with a search engine should be one of the first things you do once you’ve finish creating the site.

Like any other business you need to register and promote your website encouraging people to visit the site. What better way than via the use of a search engine like Google.

There are two main ways you can register your website with a search engine, one is manual hand submission the other is using a search engine submission service (these services are also known as search engine registration services).

Manual hand submission is known to be the most effective way of registering your website with a search engine BUT there are thousands of search engines on the Internet. I don’t know about you but I do not want to be doing manual hand submissions to all these search engines.

Using a search engine submission service to register your website with these search engines is often a far better way to begin promoting your website.

Most registration services will charge a fee for a full submission; this fee will range from $3.00 to around $40.00 as per any other service you pay for what you get, if you opt for a cheap service then you will receive a cheap product.

Pay that little bit extra and you will receive other important services such as search engine registration reports and support for further search engine optimization issues you may encounter.

If you’re unsure about using a search engine registration service why not try our free registration tool and see what you think?

mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">Sometime ago I wrote a post about Google releasing “Google
Caffeine“. What I could take from the limited
information available was there’s not going to be much of a change to the algorithm
and it’s structured more for speed, seeing a lot of “under the hood” changes.

This previous announcement was late last year, since
then there have been murmurs about the shift in search engine results though
nothing concrete from Google themselves, well today Google announced the completion
of Caffeine.

Google Caffeine will provide fresher search results,
previously when searching on Google some of the results returned may have been
out of date, this is due to the speed at which Google found and indexed new
content. Caffeine has been built to find and index content MUCH quicker,
delivering quicker and more recent search results.

What does this mean for all of us that rely on
Google search engine traffic, no real major surprises here? Keep your content
fresh, up to date and make sure your web pages are quick to load.

I guess from now on we will be seeing even more social media content and sites in the Google SERP’s?

Links are the threads that bind the web together. The Internet “web” is not so different from an actual spider web. Each page on the Internet is connected by an intricate system of links which connect websites to other websites.

In order for a website to perform well in search engine rankings, it must have connections to other websites through links. These connections or links not only help search engines locate new content as it becomes available, but they also weave together networks of websites that are all related. The number and strength of connections that a website has will help determine the importance of that website.

If a website is isolated and only contains a limited number of links, it is usually not considered as important as a website that has a large volume of links from related websites. Search engines use “link popularity” to measure and assess the quality and quantity of links pointing to a given webpage. The majority of large search engines use link popularity as part of their algorithm for ranking websites in their search results

In addition to the volume of links that point to a website, search engines also look at the relevance of those links. The search engine spiders analyze the text that is used around the links in order to determine the contextual relevance of the links.

Search engines also examine the anchor text, or the text that is used to link to a website. The anchor text is another contextual indicator that helps the search engines determine what the website is about.

Search engines also take a critical look at the time frame in which links are acquired. Search engines prefer link text to be varied, and for links to be acquired over time, because it is more “natural” and less likely to be manipulated.

“How come I can’t find my site in Google?”

If I had a dollar coin in my pocket every time I was asked this question I’d need a belt to keep my pants up.

Here are a few points to consider when checking to see if you site has been indexed by Google:

1. How old is your website? If you have recently purchased the domain and created the site then Google may not even know your site exists, in that case it’s a good idea to do a search engine submission. The submission tells the search engine that your site exists and it should come and visit.

2. Try searching for your domain name i.e. if your web address is www.MattsRedRunners.com then search for MattsRedRunners.com OR MattsRedRunners. This is almost a sure fire way to return your website within the Google search results.

3. If your site sells Nike runners and you are doing a search for the site using the search term “buy Nike runners”, you may not show up in Google. The reason for your site not appearing could be due to it’s not been optimized for the term “buy Nike runners”.

Google like all other search engines are busy accepting submissions and crawling the web. If you expect that once you’ve created a website and submitted it to the search engines you will be getting traffic the next day, I’m sorry to say but you will be sadly disappointed. It can take engines weeks to include your website into the search results.

Search engine optimization is ongoing; each SEO project should be allocated a regular weekly and monthly amount of time to focus on optimizing a website for search.

A key element of SEO is ensuring your website’s constantly updated within the search engines i.e. Yahoo, Google, BING etc. If the engines cannot find your website then on page optimization is a waste of time, thus search engine submission must be factored into your SEO campaign for that much needed head start on search engine traffic.

Submitting data to a search engine can be very time consuming and boring which is why we use search engine submission services to do the boring stuff for us.

AddMe search engine submission partners NeedMoreHits have recently released another new product to their ever growing website promotion and traffic generation suite, Yahoo Search Engine Submission.

The NeedMoreHits SEO team will take the leg work out of submitting your site to Yahoo, ensuring the submission data is optimized for its best chance of inclusion into the search engine index.

They’re also offering a re-submission service, ensuring that your site is re-submitted to the Yahoo index each month. Each month the team will re optimize and submit your website to Yahoo, helping keep the engine up to date with any new changes that may have occurred on your website.

Create a free account and check out the new Yahoo Submission product, tell them Matt sent you.

As a website owner, one of your top priorities is going to be getting your site indexed and ranked by Google. People perform over 235 million searches a day with Google,

so the potential to receive significant traffic from this search engine should be enough for you to invest the time to make sure it’s done right.

Google wants to fill its index with quality, error free websites that are beneficial and targeted to their searchers. Enter Google’s Webmaster Central Tools ….. http://google.com/webmasters . If you’ve never heard of it, it’s Google’s way of helping you with your website’s indexing. Not too long ago, it went through a redesign and upgrade process which made it more useful and easier to use than ever.

First thing you’ll need to sign in with is a Google account. Google requires an account to be able to use all of their free services, including Blogger and Analytics, so if you don’t have one, now’s the time to register.

If you have multiple websites to list, that’s no problem. Up to 500 sites can be added all under one roof. You will need to perform what Google calls “site verification” for each site submitted. This proves to Google that you are the owner of the site before they release detailed information to you. At one time it was a lengthy process of cutting and pasting code into the head section of your index page or uploading a separate HTML file. Now they’ve streamlined the process and it’s all done with one click of an email.

If you use Blogger.com, “Webmaster Tools” can be enabled from within the Blogger dashboard under tools/resources. Once your sites have been submitted, you’ll have access

to a whole suite of useful tools. The website is broken up into three main sections.

1) Site Configuration (Information about your site)

2) Your Site on the Web (Google data re: your site)

3) Diagnostics (Any problems Google had while indexing our site)

If your website has never received a decent ranking with Google, these numerous reports will help you in tracking own the problem. It’s truly an “eye opener” to see your site through the eyes of a search engine.

On the “Crawl Errors Page”, any errors Google encountered while crawling your site are revealed. The url’s not listed, and the types of problems such as restricted by robots txt, url’s that timed out, and unreachable url’s will be uncovered. If numerous pages of your site are not indexed, Sitemaps can also be submitted to help Google find and crawl all of the ages of your site.

If your website is not showing up in Google’s index, or you think it’s being penalized for some reason, you can contact Google from within the “tools interface” with a “reconsideration” request. This will ask Google to take another look at your site. Before submitting, make sure you’ve cleaned up any errors, and that you’re not in violation of any of Google’s webmaster guidelines.

Here’s a small sample of some other tasks that can be performed.

- Keyword Research: The keywords page lists the most important words Google found when indexing your site.So you know what keyword/phrases your site is ranking for.

- Who’s linking to your website.

- Page rank for individual pages can be reviewed.

- Change of address feature, which is useful when moving domains to let Google know.

- Data can be downloaded in spreadsheet format in order to be analyzed and tracked.

- Any RSS feeds can also be submitted as sitemaps.

- Parameter Handling- Allows you to tell Google which url’s you want them to ignore.

- Emails from Google’s Webmaster Tools can be forwarded to any email address you specify.

Contrary to popular belief, Google wants you to succeed online which is why they give you the tools needed to fix any problems, and make your site a search engine’s indexing dream. That’s not just good business for Google, it’s good for your website too.

————————————————————————————————————

Let’s take a breather from all this hardcore SEO / Twitter stuff for
the time being and have a quick look at an interesting search engine I
found the other day, Goby.com.

In the words of the Goby creators:

“Goby (GO-be) is a new search engine that’s all about finding fun ways to spend your free time, from a weekend to a week off.”

Using Goby you can create your own adventure, at the least you can get
an idea of what’s on in your surrounding areas or regions you are
headed to on the weekend / during the week.

The beauty of Goby is it searches multiple event calendars; presenting all possible events in the one location. From past experience this has always proven to be somewhat of a pain, organizing and trying locate weekend activities.

Another brilliant feature, best suited to the traveler is the “Places to stay” feature, helping the user locate hotels, hostels, bed and breakfasts and more.

Since I love my travel and always keen to check out new hostels I decided to tease myself with a search for hostels near Los Angeles .

The results page was packed with valuable information and a couple of nice tools enabling me to drill down and refine my search. Other handy features included “What’s nearby”, photos of the hostels and more.

Goby is a brilliant idea, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out plus some regional versions of the platform would also be nice i.e. UK, Australia etc.

Definitely worth a look!

More news on Bing (MSN, Windows Live etc) this week – according to Nielsen Bing has acquired over 10% market share.

Yes, the little engine that could, can and just might (well, they’re a way off yet).

Yes Bing has yet again closed the gap on Google, increasing search engine market share to 10.7 % in August. This growth indicated by its massive Month on Month growth of 22.1%, leaving Yahoo for dead with a negative growth rate of -4.2% (ouch).

Source: Nielsen MegaView Search

Google still has a strong hold on the search space with 64.6% share though I do like to entertain the thought that one day Google will share some of this and the game will even up.
